Coach Kevin Wilson

It appears coach Kevin Wilson Offensive Coordinator at Oklahoma will be IU’s next football coach.

Wilson worked with late Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner at Miami-Ohio before joining the late Randy Walker's staff at Northwestern. Hoeppner would become coach at Miami when Walker moved to Northwestern.

"Coach Walker, my boss, played for Bill Mallory and Coach Mallory was the coach then, so my view of Indiana was through Coach Walker's eyes because he played for Coach Mallory and loved him," said Wilson at the airport in Norman.

Here we go again

Athletic Director Fred Glass in his press conference stated the obvious, “The bottom line is three Big Ten wins in three years is not the basis for an extension" and so the Lynch era is history. Corso, Mallory, Cameron, and now Bill Lynch all won the Bucket and were promptly shown the door. Lynch recruited character student athletes and served under some unprecedented times. Lynch gained steam as the head coach after the 2007 season, when the Hoosiers went 7-6 and to the Insight Bowl. It was the first bowl game for the Hoosiers since 1993, under Bill Mallory.

Of course, the flip side to that is the 2007 team was basically Hoeppner's. Lynch was handed the team after the untimely death of the very popular coach. Since that season, the Hoosiers have gone 12-24, with a 1-7 conference record in each of the three seasons. With the facility upgrade and a commitment to spend some serious money in a new hire IU football might be headed in a positive direction. On the other hand, this will be the fourth hire for the IU position in the past nine years. We shall see.

Purdue

IU had lost six straight at Purdue, 12 straight in conference play and 15 straight league games outside of Bloomington. The Hoosiers were facing their first winless season in Big Ten play since 1995. But in overtime, Mitch Ewald kicks a 31 yard field goal to win 34-31 and to retain the bucket.

Penn State

A career-long 49-yard field goal by Indiana's Mitch Ewald tied the game early in the third quarter. McGloin hit Moye for a 21-yard touchdown pass to put Penn State back ahead 24-17, and Chappell connected with Doss for a 3-yard score to tie the game again.

But Andrew Daily stuffed the ball before it could leave punter Chris Hagerup's foot to set up Van Fleet's touchdown return. A 35-yard field goal by Collin Wagner made it a 10-point lead, and Silas Redd’s 1-yard run in the final minutes sealed the win.

Iowa

Ricky Stanzi threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Marvin McNutt with 2:50 left, rallying No. 15 Iowa to an 18-13 victory at Indiana.

On fourth-and-10, Damarlo Belcher appeared to grab, then drop, what would have been a touchdown pass with 28 seconds left. The play was so close that the Hoosiers' home crowd roared with approval, thinking Belcher scored. The replay showed, clearly, that Belcher never had control of the ball and the on-field call stood. They've now lost five of six, 10 straight in conference play and 11 in a row against ranked teams dating to an October 2006 upset against then No. 15 Iowa.

Northwestern

Hyped as a showdown between the league's No. 1 and No. 2 passing quarterbacks, Ben Chappell and Dan Persa, but Persa clearly outplayed the Indiana senior.

Persa finished 18 of 28 for 212 yards and ran 11 times for 19 yards before leaving with 8:53 left in the game.

Chappell was 30 of 54 for 308 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for a score, but he missed receivers high and long most of the day and the Hoosiers' usually high-scoring offense never got in sync.

Illinois

Ben Chappell entered the Illinois game with the fourth-best passing yard average in the country and only three interceptions on the season. Illinois applied pressure early and brought that season total to six.

For good measure, the Illini also snagged an interception from backup Dusty Kiel in the game's final minute. The end result a 43-13 loss. It was the Illini’s 100th Homecoming. Illinois led 27-10 after a first half in which it converted three Indiana turnovers into 17 points. The Illini had no giveaways.

Lineman Justin Staples forced a fumble in the second quarter that led to Scheelhaase's touchdown pass to Jarred Fayson. Minutes later, Staples hit on Hoosier quarterback Ben Chappell to force an interception that Patrick Nixon-Youman returned 68 yards for another and a 24-10 lead.

Chappell finished 26-48 with 279 yards

Arkansas State

Ben Chappell threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns in the second half, rallying the Hoosiers for a 36-34 victory over Arkansas State. The victory allowed Indiana to sweep its four nonconference opponents, end a two-game losing streak and regain some momentum.

Arkansas State was led by Ryan Aplin, who was 33 of 44 for 275 yards with two TD passes, two TD runs and two interceptions. He also set a single-game school record for completions, but the Red Wolves (2-5) still dropped to 0-5 all-time against Big Ten foes.

For 30 minutes, it looked as if Arkansas State might end that drought and earn the second win in school history over a BCS school. But Chappell's huge second half changed everything. Chappell found Terrance Turner for a nifty 27-yard TD pass late in the third quarter to make it 19-14. Arkansas State came close two or three times but never retook the lead.

Ohio State

Indiana, which has not beaten the Buckeyes since 1988, has never beaten a team ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in 27 attempts.

Indiana came in averaging 40 points and almost 350 passing yards a game, but quarterback Ben Chappell was harassed all day, completing 16 of 26 for 106 yards with two interceptions.
The Buckeyes piled up 478 yards while the Hoosiers finished with just 210, less than half their average of 455 yards a game. Dan Herron added two touchdowns while rushing for 68 yards on 12 carries.

Terrelle Pryor's passing yardage easily surpassed his previous high of 266 in a victory over Oregon in the 2010 Rose Bowl. With his sixth straight game of at least 300 yards of total offense, he tied the school record held by Joe Germaine (1996-98). Pryor, who also moved into fourth place in total offense at Ohio State with 6,518 yards, finished 24 of 30.

OSU Coach Jim Tressel improved to 235-78-2 in 25 years (the first 15 at Football Championship Subdivision Youngstown State). He won his 100th at Ohio State in his 121st game, the third-fastest among Big Ten coaches.

Michigan

Michigan and Indiana traded offensive punches all afternoon Saturday, setting records and shredding defenses. Heisman Trophy candidate Denard Robinson was superb; Ben Chappell might have matched him throwing a school record 480 yards.

It wasn’t easy or pretty for either team at Memorial Stadium.

The No. 19 Wolverines and unranked Hoosiers combined for 1,143 offensive yards, including 943 through three quarters.

Every time the Wolverines (5-0) tried to pull away, Indiana (3-1) responded. The Hoosiers tied the game five different times through four quarters.

Darius Willis caught a 19-yard TD pass from Chappell with 1:15 left in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 35. Michigan didn’t clinch the win until Robinson hooked up with Junior Hemingway on a 42-yard pass down to the Indiana 4-yard line with 21 seconds remaining that put the Wolverines in position for the winning score.

None more important than the game-winning touchdown run with 17 seconds remaining. Robinson carried to the left side for the winning TD on the next play.

It was a see-saw game the entire afternoon.

By the time the offensive battle everyone expected finally ended, Michigan emerged with a 42-35 victory.

Akron

Ben Chappell threw a career-high four touchdown passes to lead Indiana past Akron 35-20. Chappell was 23 of 33 for 342 yards. Terrance Turner caught six passes for 121 yards and one TD for the Hoosiers (3-0). It was Turner's first career 100-yard game.
Patrick Nicely was 15 of 27 for 175 yards with two touchdowns for the Zips (0-4), who have not beaten a Big Ten school since 1894.

Indiana made good use of its tight ends. Chappell threw two TDs to redshirt freshman Ted Bolser , and his third scoring toss went to Max Dedmond. Bolser became the first Hoosiers tight end with four TD catches in a season since 1979. Tandon Doss sealed it with a 9-yard TD run late in the third quarter.

Western Kentucky

Ben Chappell passed for a career-high 366 yards as Indiana defeated Western Kentucky 38-21, giving the Hilltoppers their 23rd straight defeat. Chappell completed 32 of 42 passes to break his old record of 333 yards against Illinois last year. The Hoosiers' Tandon Doss returned the opening kickoff 87 yards to the Hilltoppers 13-yard line, but on the second play of the drive Darius Willis fumbled and Western Kentucky (0-3) recovered.
The Hilltoppers then went 91 yards in 10 plays to score the first touchdown of the game. Bobby Rainey rushed for 62 yards during the drive, including a run of 29 yards down the Western Kentucky sideline.
Western Kentucky managed only 197 total yards the rest of the game. Chappell completed 11 straight passes on the Hoosiers' (2-0) next two possessions. He passed for 230 yards in the first half to give Indiana a 17-7 halftime lead.
Western Kentucky had only one first down in the third quarter as the Hoosiers scored on six of seven possessions to build a comfortable 31-7 lead. Two Hoosiers had at least eight receptions: Demarlo Belcher caught 10 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown and Terrance turner had eight receptions for 55 yards.
