June 19, 2008 Old turf is taken out

Workers today began the process of replacing the playing surface at Memorial Stadium.

The athletic department and University are currently in negotiations to replace the existing turf with a state-of-the art playing surface that will be installed and ready for use by the first week of August.

The Independence Bowl's Hall Ironic as it is work began on the first anniversary of coach Hoeppner's passing and the day he was honored by the Independence Bowl's Hall of Honor.

How's this for a new field?

opps!

IU football player Dustin Haas stands in a depression at Memorial Stadium caused by Wednesday's heavy rains. The damage apparently is a result of pressure from rushing water underneath the artifical turf, breaking cement that supports the field.

The sunken part of the field, just past the south end zone, is perhaps 10 feet long by eight feet wide, and is close to two feet deep in spots. There are other ripples in the field running through the end zone to the 6-yard line.

No information was immediately available from IU on the significance of the damage or the cost of repairing it.
