LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Curtis Painter passed for 260 yards and a touchdown
and overcame four interceptions to lead Purdue to a 28-19 win over Indiana on
Saturday in the Old Oaken Bucket game.
Purdue's victory eliminated Indiana from bowl
contention.
Greg Orton caught six passes for 112 yards and
Dorien Bryant caught five passes for 74 yards and ran for a score for Purdue
(8-4, 5-3 Big Ten). The Boilermakers finished in a tie for fourth place in the
conference.
Kellen Lewis passed for 290 yards and a touchdown
and ran for 103 and a score, and James Hardy caught nine passes for 151 yards
and a touchdown for Indiana (5-7, 3-5). The Hoosiers gained 505 yards, but
scored just two touchdowns.
Painter threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Orton
with 9:13 left in the third quarter to give the Boilermakers a 14-3 lead.
Indiana responded with a six-play, 74-yard scoring
drive. A 28-yard pass from Lewis to Hardy moved the ball to the Purdue 25, and
two plays later, Lewis ran 15 yards for a touchdown to cut Purdue's lead to
14-10 with 6:56 left in the third quarter.
Purdue came back with a nine-play, 80-yard scoring
drive. Kory Sheets scored on a 2-yard run to give Purdue a 21-10 lead with 2:45
left in the third quarter.
Indiana's Austin Starr made a 31-yard field goal
with 46 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 21-13.
Starr pushed a 26-yarder left with 11:07 left in
the fourth quarter. Indiana got the ball back after Painter's fourth interception,
and a 53-yard run by Demetrius McCray set up a first-and-goal from the 2.
Purdue forced a fourth-and-goal from the 7, but Lewis found Hardy in the middle
of the end zone for a score to cut Purdue's lead to 21-19. The Boilermakers
stopped Lewis on a quarterback draw on the 2-point conversion attempt.
Purdue's nine-play, 76-yard scoring drive put the
game out of reach. Bryant scored on a 15-yard run to give the Boilermakers a
28-19 lead with 5:06 to play.
