Wake Forest's defense kept taking the ball away.

On a day the Demon Deacons picked off five passes and blocked a field goal, Quarterback John Wolford ran for two scores, threw for another and led Wake to a momentous 33-28 victory at Indiana. Wake is off to its first 4-0 start (1-0 ACC) in 10 years and celebrated coach Dave Clawson's 100th career win.

The Hoosiers first loss came in unexpected fashion. Devine Redding ran 16 times for 68 yards. And after throwing no interceptions in his first two FBS starts, Lagow turned it over five times. Yes, the Hoosiers played without their starting right tackle and starting right guard, but they must play much better going forward.

Indiana had a moment of silence before the game for Allison Hoeppner, the daughter of Terry and Jane Hoeppner, who the school said was killed in a car crash early Saturday. Terry Hoeppner coached the Hoosiers for two seasons and died in June 2007 after battling brain cancer. "We are shocked and saddened by this terrible tragedy," Coach Wilson said in a statement. "The Hoeppners mean a great deal, not only to me and my family, but to the entire IU Football family."

IU v Ball State

Richard Lagow and Devine Redding kept the Indiana offense humming. The Hoosiers defense took care of everything else. Lagow threw for 266 yards and three touchdowns and Redding extended his streak of consecutive 100-yard games to five, Indiana forced three turnovers, pitched its first first-half shutout in four years and survived a frantic fourth-quarter flurry for a 30-20 victory over Ball State.

Trailing 13 - 12 entering the fourth quarter the Hoosiers scored 21 points to pull away 31-13. Richard Lagow passed for one score and ran for another. The defense returned two interceptions. The game had a little of everything; a safety, a missed field goal a bad snap on another field goal try, two defensive touchdowns and an end-around for a two point conversion.

New Turf

Pinstripe Bowl

In their first bowl appearance since 2007, the Hoosiers led Duke throughout, but ultimately fell on a controversial missed field goal call, 44-41, in overtime in the Pinstripe Bowl and Yankee Stadium in New York. 

Duke (8-5) got a field goal on its first OT drive, giving Nate Sudfeld and Indiana (6-7) a chance to tie or win the game. The Hoosiers went 3-and-out, though, setting kicker Griffin Oakes up for a potential game-tying FG.

Oakes' 38-yard attempt was ruled no good, but Oakes immediately chased after the officials and challenged their decision. 

"No way I missed that," he told the officials.

But because the kick was determined to have been over the uprights, the play was not reviewable, and the game was over.

Pinstripe Bowl

The 6-6 Hoosiers will take on the 7-5 Duke Blue Devils in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl in New York on Saturday December 26 in Yankee Stadium.

Purdue

Indiana had won two in a row in the series—both in Bloomington. The teams haven’t met in West Lafayette since 2012, the last time Purdue won the Old Oaken Bucket. Entering the game Purdue lead the series 72–39–6 and trophy series. The first Bucket game resulted in a 0-0 tie, which led to the initial "I-P" chain link to be attached to the Bucket.  Kickoff for the 118th meeting and 91st Annual Old Oaken Bucket game was set for a noon kickoff at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette.

The Hoosiers won their third straight Bucket Game for the first time since a four-game winning streak from 1944-47.

They scored a school-record 54 points in West Lafayette, breaking the previous mark set in a 52-7 victory in 1988.

They finished the season by winning two straight conference road games -- something they hadn't done since 1993.

They have likely ended the speculation that surfaced about Wilson's future in Bloomington during a six-game losing streak, virtually assuring him of getting a chance to finish the rebuilding project he started five years ago.

And thanks to Sudfeld, Indiana wrapped it up in style.

Sudfeld finished 18 of 29 with 350 yards, giving him 7,490 career yards -- enough to surpass Antwaan Randle El (7,469) on Indiana's all-time list.

Running back Devine Redding started in place of the injured Jordan Howard (knee) and ran 22 times for a career high 144 yards and one score on a day he hurdled one defender on a 27-yard run in the first half and a zigzagged for a 57-yard pickup to set up Sudfeld's 3-yard TD run to open the second half. That made it 31-14.

Defensive end Nick Magieri  had three sacks to give him 15, tied for the ninth-most in one season in school history, and Griffin Oakes   made two field goals to break Austin Starr's single-season record of 21. Oakes has 22.

But it wasn't the numbers that mattered most to Indiana. It was the result. Final score 54-36 Hoosiers.
